| Hi, Please pass this message on to
drivers who have mounted disc brakes. I bought my disc
brake about a year ago. I'm really happy about it since
the difference compared to the original drum brake is
like night and day. It has worked fine and I have trusted
it and I plan my driving based on the expected brake
capacity. Today I suddenly had no front brake power at
all! Luckily I just left the garage at home when it
happened. If it would have happened on the highway oe
close to a red light I might not have been in a position
to write this mail at this moment.
What happened was the
following: The brake disc is mounted with five bolts to
an adapter that connects with splines to the front wheel.
The problem is that the adapter is made of three
different parts that are welded together. The welding
between the outer an inner part was very poor and broke.
This disconnected the disc from the wheel. The disc
stopped rotating when I braked but since it was totally
disconnected from the wheel it did not give any brake
power whatsoever.
Luke helped me to fix it
by cutting away sufficient material from the adapter
parts to make a proper welding. A better solution would
of course to make such an extremely important security
part in one piece.
Please warn other drivers
so they are at least mentally prepared on what to do if
it happens. (I will always keep my foot close to the
brake pedal from now on and drive with extra security
margin).
I thank God that it
happened when I was driving so slowly.
Regards,
Lennart Holm
