From Tim Lagonegro in Beijing: "Here are pics of Handel Lee's hacked Harley—with Dong Hai sidecar."

Gerald sent this download of a Donghai rigged with an 82mm gun, an excellent solution to certain traffic situations.

"We have what appeared to be a new Donghai 750 in a basket at our shop [in Beijing]. The engine also looks almost new. We'd like to get rid of it. No sidecar though. Asking US $1500 or best offer." jim@way2prc.com

From Clay Jones, January 8, 2009: "Just to clear up some questions I have received, Donghai Unlimited [Clay's web site, not to be confused with the original DHU] has not reopened yet, but will shortly with a new location and if anyone needs parts they can contact me (even if folks have given me a wish list before, please resubmit) at hclayjones@hotmail.com. I moved a large inventory to a new location and will be sorting everything out during the Spring Festival. The web site was dropped due to the current economic trend but I will try and repost the manual and pics in a new location in the future, possiblly on a registered website on a Chinese server. Old new stock includes everything from headlights to frames and fenders with four new, still in the box engines and a load of those Donghai sidecars that have been recently featured on Jimbo's Classics. Newly manufactured sidecar covers in brown or black (see photos) and handmade seats and seat frames (uncovered or covered, see photo), in case your sidecar needs a new sit down."

"I have sent pictures of the new location, quite a mess right now, but plenty of promise as a 'meeting place' and with the possibility of a garage as one is attached to the main storage room. The location is close to Beijing in a small Muslim town on an out of the way side of town."

Below: These Donghai 750 images were downloaded from Moto8.com, a large Chinese message board with loads of interesting motorcycle pictures. One bike has a detail item I haven't run across before—Dong Hai script attached to the toolbox. The style isn't quite the same as what's on the gearbox casting which suggests they might have been added after the bike left the factory.

A brand new old Dong Hai engine soon to be on its way to Germany, courtesy of Clay.

Big news from Frans de Wit: "Look what I found in a barn today! It has been sitting there for about four years after being imported with two (incomplete) brothers. Made a down payment—now I'll need transport and a place to work at it. I'll keep you up to date."

Gerald sent this interesting picture of Chinese NBA star player Yao Ming seated on a Dong Hai during his childhood.

Scott Snaden sold his Donghai on eBay. The opening bid was $3000 and it sold for $4500.

An image from Clay Jones. This is Mister Liu chatting with Jia Yin.
Same subjects, different angle—with an unidentified bonus subject in the foreground. That sure is a cool license plate on Clay's DH.

This is Clay Jones' buddy Feng with his Donghai.
And here, of course, is Clay.
This appears to be a most excellent bike.
I recognize the horn on Feng's Donghai. It's a Bailing (Lark) brand DL79-6.
Feng's assistant does a little cleaning.

Clay Jones sent this shot of a Donghai 750 with the caption Donghai found.

LRM acquired this 1984 Dong Hai.
It's a PLA bike showing only 561km.
The taillight looks a lot like the ones on recent Changs.
These bikes look especially good in olive drab paint... IMHO.
Another look at the port side.
Here's the frame tag.
That engine cover is a focal point on these machines.
The speedo and ammeter.
From the bow with the trunk lid open.
The trunk.

We've seen a lot of different Chang Jiang frame tags here on CJU but this is the first image we've had of a Dong Hai 750 frame tag, courtesy of Gerald at LRM.
Here's a slightly better view.
We also have loads of CJ speedometers here but not too many Dong Hais. This one is on the bike Gerald bought last week. The Chinese writing makes it all the more special.

Gerald Gardebled bought another Dong Hai 750, and here it is.
This bike is showing 43km on the odometer.
I'd sure like to know the history on this bike.
Heavy duty front fender and forks.
I especially like the fender light on the sidecar...
...and last but not least, the best part!

Shao sent these two images of a Donghai in Beijing.
Scroll down the page to see the Donghai Shao restored last year. It will give you a good idea of how this bike will look!

This Dong Hai was on the premises of LRM in Beijing.

This eBay Donghai opened at $9.99 with no reserve. It sold for $500
Take a look at the ammeter and speedo on this bike. The Chinese gives them character.
The jugs are missing.
The sidecar will need some body work, but it can be saved.
I'd sure like to know the history on this bike.
Again...
...and last but not least, the best part!

What's the best part of a Dong Hai 750? The engine side cover, of course.
Why? Because it has this most excellent logo cast into it.
