Gerald wishes everyone a Happy Moon Festival.

"Here are pictures of a CJ that I recently got from the PLA. It features special equipment that seems to have been used to lay out communication lines. You can see the complexity of that equipment and the shaft-driven gear of the rear end."

"These are the screws that tighten the jaws on the sidecar frame bottom mounting points as used on the early CJ, M72 and BMW. They have a leather strap that goes around the frame tube to prevent the screw from getting loose. Those interested in a set can get in touch."

"Here are QHQ-15 carbs. These are also 24mm carburetors. The best carbs to use with a SV M1 or M1M engine. LRM just managed to get 23 pairs of these along with two pairs of 26mm carbs, best to use with OHV engines."
"Anyone interested can e-mail me at gardebledg@hotmail.com."

"Today I spoted a 1997 M1M on a Beijing street. Also another plastic Xiang Jiang and a customized M1S."
October 4, 2006
"Here's a shipment of parts that left for Europe. Recently LRM has been supplying many European and North American dealers with quality, well chosen parts. Customers have been able to see the huge differences with what they received in the past from other sources."

"Yesterday I went outside Beijing and was able to bring back some vintage parts from a PLA warehouse. Here is one very interesting item, a vintage fork for the early CJs. It has the upper plate rounded, not squared as the new ones. It is amazing to see how good the workmanship is on this fork assembly."

"Here is a picture from January the 11th. in Fuzhou province. The police reinforced patrols in the city as the Chinese New Year was getting closer." This one (and a K-9) is riding an old school CJ.

"Here is a 1974 M1 in Laos."
"The bike is almost in its original state. It belongs to a French guy who told me he purchased the bike from a friend."
"He says CJs were owned by the police, mainly a special unit called the "Three Kings." (The translation has nothing to do with kings. It is just phonetic.)."
"Also they used Russian bikes. Some changes have been made to the bike over the years. The original green paint was replaced by black with pinstripes."
"The Chinese voltage regulator was changed to a Russian one as has the kickstarter rubber. A switch was added to the headlight as the light and horn switch went bad."
"(It's a Type II switch.) Rims and spokes were chromed along with the handlebars and other items. Note the rear fender with the reflector and the taillight, all original from the period with the wiring running outside."
"Tires also have been changed. The gas tank has rubber knee pads, correct for the period. This bike is almost complete."
"It would not take much to restore it to its original form as you can still find spares from the period. Even the horn is original, made in Shanghai."

OHV solo done up in traditional BMW-style livery...
... just the latest bike from LRM.
December 26, 2005
Another CJ rarity: "Here are pictures of a CJ from the eighties. This PLA issue bike is fitted with all the hardware to carry a 125mm recoiless gun for anti-tank combat.
"The bike can carry 8 shells in the bottom storage. You can see also the wheel hubs that are bottlecap style but with only short spokes. These wheels were often seen on the off-road CJs in the eighties. This a real combat machine."
"I guess that everyone can imagine the weight of the bike with the gun, shells in the storage and all the other needed equipment plus three soldiers all with their equipment."
"6V sidevalve bikes can carry alot and pull a lot more that someone could imagine."

"Here are pictures of an M1M that I delivered to one of my customers today. This bike will be soon leaving for Greece. I have an identical black M1M for sale—a PLA restoration."
"The carburetors, starter, electrical components, wiring, rims, crank, bearings, pistons, rings, sidcar bucket, tires, etc. are all new items."
"That bike is already built and just waiting to be shipped. It will be delivered with papers to register it as a vintage vehicle. People can contact me at gardebledg@hotmail.com."

"Here are pictures of a wonderful find. I have been lucky by finding these two items—a brand new Type I gearbox and a Type I crankcase."
"These items are hard to find used so when I found them new I could not believe it."
"According to the markings stamped on both items, they were manufactured in 1965."
"I like the vintage Type I engine case for two reasons—the crank front bearing seats in a metal jacket and not directly in the aluminum like the cranckases made since 1966."
"The dipstick access is much better by being located at the bottom of the case."
July 8, 2005
"Here are pictures of the new carburetors—the latest for the CJ. Mikuni is written on them."
"That's all I can say at the moment. I did not have that much time to analyse them..."

"PLA-issue brake cables from 1974."
June 10, 2005

"The original factory-issue tool for installing/removing the clutch system."
"The factory-issue tool for removing the flywheel."
Very good items to have in your shop.

"A speedometer cable packing slip from PLA Factory 7407."
June 6, 2005
"Here are pictures of a tool made specially to tighten the flywheel screw."

June 3, 2005
"Here are pictures of a PLA-issue donut."
"This one was made on October 30th., 1965, by Factory 402 in the Chengdu military district."

"Here are pictures of the earliest regulator used on the CJ 750, the PP-31. It was named after the Russian ones made for the M72, also called PP-31. The box in which it was waiting for me for 38 years is of course covered with wax. The production date is March 30th., 1967. The nice notice that came with it has (of course) a quote from Chairman Mao."
"The front cover of the PP-31 regulator has its name stamped on it, PP-31, then the number 67657 which is its serial number. The 67 which stands for the year 1967."
"Under that is stamped the specifications: 6 volt, 7 ampers."
"On the side where you connect the wires are the Russian letters: B for the battery connection, yach for the armature connection and tch for the field connection."
"This regulator was produced by the State Owned Factory Number 185. This is a high quality item."

This type of gas cap is seldom seen these days.

"The final cover 6207 bearing puller that can also be used to pull the 6207 bearings from the crankshaft."
May 29, 2005
This is an interesting, factory-issue tool used for installing piston rings. For a dedicated, hardcore CJ enthusiast like Gerald, there's no end to collecting things like this.
Here's another factory-issue tool that was used for installing clutch rods.
May 28, 2005
Remember the vintage toolbox tanks from last month? Here's how one looks after it's been restored. The CJ750 logo is painted on. (Scroll down to see some "before" pictures.)
May 22, 2005
Here are pictures of vintage CJ final drive casings. They have the same design as the M72 casing.
The quality of these parts is outsanding compared to what's made now. Most of these covers are from PLA Factory 7416 factory as marked on the covers.
May 2, 2005
Take a close look at these early petcocks.
Not only are they far superior to the ones available today, but they have interesting Chinese markings on them as well. But what's best of all is the M72 designation.

41 vintage CJ750 sidecar taillights. Awesome.
May 2, 2005
What's an excellent source for vintage spark-advance levers? Vintage handlebars, of course. Here's a few that Gerald acquired recently.
The fourth picture shows a bunch of vintage PLA gas caps. If you'd like one, contact Gerald using the e-mail link at the top of this page.

Check out these rugged, vintage PLA rear fenders (with reflectors).
These fenders are very heavy compared to later ones.

Re-enactors will really like this new product—reproduction prewar BMW air filters.

Whoa. 24 vintage spark advance-horn-highbeam switches.
They are all marked with Chinese characters cast into the main body.
April 29, 2005
"This is a real vintage item..."
"...not the cheap repro sometimes found."
"This is an early model as the end goes straight (by the driver's seat bracket.)"
"Another rarely seen item is the key that opens the toolbox lid."
"This gas tank also sports an early CJ750 swoosh emblem."
