Leo & Angela Struyk now living in France
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
December 19, 2010
"Here are some visiting local biker friends, mostly on Harley-Davidsons. They enjoyed my collection and saw for first time a Chang Jiang.
"I alas broke the next day six ribs tumbling over a pump in my workshop so the Chang and other bikes are  getting a rest for two months while I am am clustered to a chair at this moment. No motorcycling... Greetings from very hot France."

"Spring is here in France and finally got my French papers and plate for my Chang Jiang. Next week insurance papers and then able to take the bike for a ride. Started in one kick after a winter of storage. At this moment restoring a big barn from 1851 with a planned workshop for restoration downstairs and exhibition space upstairs, lots of work so working around the clock daily . Plan to take the kids of the vacationers for a ride this summer. Hope they tell there parents to return following year to the place with the sidecar ride."

Leo has a wonderful collection of bikes in addition to his CJ. This is his 1946 Harley-Davidson Servicar. What a fantastic old machine!

"My name is Rembrandt Struyk and I'm a son of Leo. I'm in a few pictures on your site taken when I was on holiday to visit my parents in China a few years back. Now that they moved to France my girlfriend and I had to go see their new house of course... and have a small drive on the Chang Jiang. My girlfriend enjoyed it a lot, and we took a few pictures. I thought I'd send them to you, might be nice to show everyone how my father is doing in France. Hope that you like the pictures."

This picture is from an exhibition in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It was about photographers during the Communist regime of Mao. I noticed there were a couple of CJs in the picture. Alas, I was not allowed to use flash so it's a bit blurred, but still nice. (Rembrandt)

"We moved to France in July to retire and focus on restoration of my extensive motorcycling collection and of course enjoy life over here. Found a beautiful old farm from 1850 including a huge barn for my motorcycle collection in a small village in Dordogne. Now busy to change it into a workshop and museum . We also have two holiday homes for vacationers."
Looking for fellow Chang riders in France and posted a message at board today.."
"Attached a few pictures from arrival, started at first kick again but alas, no plates yet..."

"At least I have my more modern bikes over there. We're just back form a beautiful trip in north Yunan Province in South China. We are leaving Shanghai after four interesting years, so no more pictures from China. The CJ is packed with a lot of spare parts and soon it will be on its way. We hope to get it on the road in France in the future but it will take some time. We traveled to the Tibetan border and wished we could have shipped my CJ there to do some driving. Excellent roads but high altitude. Along rivers in valleys would have been nice. This is my last picture from China, two Tibetan monks in Shangrila on their Chinese bike."

"After the Moto GP we went with two Chinese friends (Annie & Gene) for a two-day ride to beautiful quiet Chong Ming Island off the Shanghai coast."
"We had a good time together but my rotor burned through, probably from a long traffic jam and the 37° heat three days earlier while going to the Moto GP training. It's been replaced but is now noisy—so it needs some more attention."
Oops...
Sorted.
Leo bought a couple bamboo ladders and carried them home on his bike.
Lots of load capacity with a CJ750!

"Some pictures from spring in Shanghai. I drove the bike through the Shanghai winter, but we enjoy the spring weather now."
"I'm experimenting with a set of new carburetors in which threaded holes were put in to support temporary nipples for a flow meter to get carburetors better adjusted."
"But we still need further experimenting to get used to meter!"
"The bike runs already much better. Not too many further improvements except NGK spark pug wires and caps."

How about this? A Shanghai motorcycle market must be a really interesting place to poke around. That's Leo in the picture.

Leo found some old magazines at a flea market. Inside one were these pictures from the summer of 1971.

"Greetings from Beijing, with of course a visit to Gerald's Long River workshop. Spent a day with Gerald and Clay and we had a good time looking at all the old CJ and Dong Hai parts. Reminded me of my many treasure hunts over the years for my HD hobby but that was quite some time ago. I saw so many NOS parts and bikes. Will bring a few goodies back on the train to Shanghai to upgrade my CJ."

Leo paid a visit to LRM last week and was kind enough to snap a few pictures for us while he was there. In these images you'll see Leo, Clay and Gerald as well as a variety of Chinese bikes in varying conditions, some awaiting restoration and a couple already done. You'll also notice that they have some pretty serious winters there in Beijing—but that doesn't stop a lot of people from using their bikes.

During his visit Leo purchased some vintage parts which he took home with him on the train. He was really impressed with the stock of parts Gerald has been collecting over the years as well as all the Donghai bikes parked out back. It's apparent that Gerald devotes almost all of his energy to the history and preservation of these wonderful machines.

Holiday Greetings from the Struyks

Christmas, 2004

Here's a blast from Leo's past, his first sidecar rig. It's a '67 Harley that he spent a year rebuilding from scratch. Guess what? He still owns it, but it hasn't been run in 25 years!

November 39, 2004:
Last trip we made was to Chongming Island off the coast of Shanghai. Nice small island, unspoiled, mostly farming. Takes 1.5 hours with ferry.

Bike is doing fine and nearly reached 10,000 km since I bought it and basically engine problem free except the lost clutch bolt and the usual break-in CJ problems. Below a listing of improvements made so far and still a few to be done:

Braking & Wheels -

Cast iron wheels, to prevent broken spokes and improve braking with 38mm brake drums

All wheel bearings replaced with foreign brand and bushings/rings improved

Longer brake shoe pins and cams to support wider 38mm brake shoes

High quality, reproduction front brake cable

Wider foot brake pedal installed

Longer brake lever installed on front and rear wheel brake plates

High handle bar with better control handles for clutch and front brake

Engine performance -

Non-leaking R71 repro exhaust system with crossover tube under gearbox installed

Carburetors exchanged from left to right and heat resistance spacers and shields installed

Oil pan replaced by cast iron and extended with extra spacer to fit 2.7L of oil

Copper head gasket installed to improve cooling

Gas filters installed in between petcock and carburetors

Electrical -

High quality car battery placed in sidecar trunk

All wiring checked, replaced and proper terminals installed

Replaced ignition switch with a better one

All light bulbs replaced with better quality brand

Dual horns installed

Comfort & looks -

Harley pan seat installed with dual spring capacity and bracket bushing replaced

Front fender lowered and longer brackets installed to prevent fender hitting engine

Good quality mirrors installed

Planned improvements for better performance -

Foreign brand steering head bearings

Working PLA speedometer

Better steering damper

High quality spark plug wires and caps

Better quality distributor cap

Replace petcock with non-leaking one

Improved more flexible, non-breaking throttle cable

Check/improve front & rear suspension

Spring has finally arrived in Pudong and the Struyks are taking full advantage!
Leo's M1M received some improvements over the winter. How do you like the reproduction R71 mufflers?
The new crossover pipe under the gearbox has improved idling and increased midrange torque. These components came from London Pipes in the Netherlands. Leo says the real test will come during the hot summer months.
But for now, here's Leo out enjoying himself on the bike.
It's difficult to see in this image but the bike has a lowered oil pan thanks to Wolfgang.
The Harley pan seat was a hit with Leo's riding companions so they're having some reproductions fabricated there in China.
Leo never has to worry about keeping the wheels trued on this bike! New non-Chinese wheel bearings and bushings were also installed over the winter.
The proud owner.
And one last look for now.

Leo & Angela went for a little tour recently. Here they are in front of a beautiful yellow temple.
Leo reverses for the camera.
Oops. These bikes draw the most attention when we least want them to... but this is amazing!

The Struyks have been living in Shanghai for two and a half years. Leo Started motorcycling 35 years ago on an ex-Belgian police Harley Davidson WLA. He's been an enthusiastic collector, restorer and rider ever since. Over the years he's collected many old Harleys and sidecars, many still in parts and all stored in his home country of Holland, waiting for some attention.

Leo spent nine years in Japan before moving to China. He toured with his wife all over Japan on a Virago XV 1100, mostly camping wherever there was a spot for their bike and small tent,

In China, Leo missed motorcyling so much he couldn't resist buying a CJ750 SV. His experience with early Harleys helped in this challenge. Riding is more difficult over there although he has ridden 4500km around Shanghai this summer. The real work was done during the winter—a three-week camping trip on a rental Virago in New Zealand. Great motorcyle country but a little too wet!

Still many upgrades ongoing with the CJ. Next is a Harley pan seat, R71 repro mufflers and better mirrors from overseas. The loose glass in the 20RMB ($2.50) Chinese mirrors shakes so much you can't see, but what can you expect for that price? Hopefully a problem with burned out rotors will also get fixed soon.

Here is a series of pictures from his last trip around Shanghai along the Pudong coast with his two dragon ladies—his wife Angela and the CJ. This was the best trip so far with a good running bike and no overheating. Even the generator is still hanging in there.
