Ural Roikka Rallies with Orvo Valila

Every year in July, Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese iron converge somewhere in Finland for a weekend of riding, camping, partying and just plain old fun.

"Man that time flies.... Seems like just yesterday I was sending you the link to the previous year's Roikka pics and here we are again. A whole year later?? It's been quite a hectic year work wise with lots of org changes, a merge and a couple rounds of layoffs... Whew. Still digging into the trenches here, pushing 20 years with the company soon and just too stubborn to give up.
Not too many worries this year with the bike... Probably because I took some precautions. On the way back from Roikka in Imatra last year, the bike developed a mysterious short somewhere that I was just not able to find. Y'know a weird kind that would just cut for a second or two (enough to blow the fuse) and then disappear.

After trying to find it for a couple of days I got so fed up with it that I ordered a whole new wiring harness and replaced every single wire in the thing. It took a couple of afternoons/sixpacks but was definitely worth it.

Not only (for the first time) do I know for sure what wire exactly goes where and does what, I can also rest assured that there are no more of those horrible wraparound splices covered with cloth tape there.

Some of the splices that I found inside the old harness under the tank (no more than a few inches away from the petcock) made me cringe and reach for yet another beer...

Long story short, the bike is running better than ever now with the recent rebuild and all and I even managed to salvage one of those alternators gone last year with the help of the local shop and everething seems to be suspiciously well. Then again, the only part that I have not touched yet in the whole bike is the gearbox which is probably next to go. I do have a spare one ready for that so maybe it will not give me grief until I get rid of the spare."

[And here are the pictures from this year's Roikka!]

"2007's Roikka was in Imatra where they used to have a TT road race in 60s and early 70s. We even got an opportunity to ride the old race course through in a sidecar convoy and I do have to say that if the track really was that narrow and tricky at the time it was used for racing, there must have been some sizable brass cojones there." [From Dan: The following pictures may not be in chronological order.]
"The piston episode of course happened to the newest bike. Harri (Mr. Repairman in the pics ) thought he had the break-in period ran just fine prior to the Roikka but apparently that was not enough. By the looks of things the wrist pin seized to the piston and small end and was sticking the whole top end to one very reluctantly moving piece. We thought at first that he had the old sticking bent valve syndrome and took the heads apart on the roadside but since that did nothing to the run or horrible clank (amazing how much noise piston side play can make in the cylinder), we were forced to call in the trailer for him. Next day at the camp we got the piston changed but not without trouble as you can see in the pics. Oh yes, and we had altogether six pistons, rings and pins with us so he got to choose even. Learned the hard way... ;-)"
"Whew... made it finally. Some with trailer, some with no charging, battery only..."
"Walkaround.... what do we have here?"
"Hang on a minute. That does not look right. How many beers did I have yesterday (or today for that matter?)"
"More Urals than you can shake a stick at... if you were to do that... and why?"
"Off road, YA MAN!"
"Oh. Huh... in progress. OK, I get it now."
"Oh I see what's going on."
"In the mean while back at camp... labour camp that is."
"Looks like we have a winner. And a runner. A running engine that is."
"Nope. Still sounds horrible. Better call in the cavalry... with the trailer!"
"Oh great. Now what?"
"Stupid alternator and stupid missing washer and stupid... @£$#¤%."
"Wait a minute... this was not supposed to happen to me this year."
"Looks like the usual deal. Anything good on the paper Luv?"
"Thank goodness the pit crew still is still up to the task at hand."
"Oh that does not look good."
"That does NOT look good at all."
"Oh will you come off you son of a..."
"So that wrist pin REALLY would not come off any other way."
"And the repair continues... I wonder what IS that bike?"

The 2006 rally was minus one CJ as Orvo was having some problems getting correct engine parts from a vendor in China. Apparently they didn't know the difference between a flatty and an OHV. Next year for sure.

Below: "These are the oldest of the photos that I have with me here in the US. There is one more set from the Ural Roikka 2000 rally but unfortunately those are packed away in boxes in storage among the rest of our lives. Some of the photos are scanned from paper which probably explains the quality and the funky names in Finnish. I just could not be asked to redo all the names so I hope that is not too much of a trouble for you.

Roikka 2001 was arranged in Jämsänkoski in Central Finland, about 50 km from where I was born. Only problem there was that at the time we were living in Southern Finland, about 350 klicks away. Even that would not have been a problem except for the fact that it happened to be a very rainy summer that year. On the way there and back (and most of the time during) we managed to catch every f-----g shower that there was. Sure enough, rain gear is just for that but still…

Some of the photos you already have in a form or another but this time around you get the originals without any cropping or other form of editing.

The idea of Ural Roikka Rally is pretty much the same every year. It's always arranged around the weekend of July 20th. On Friday the bikes and the bikers start arriving and Friday night is pretty much spent in walkabouts, kicking tires and getting to know your neighbors over a beer or two. In the photo DSC03942.JPG there is a couple that we met with their K-750. We've been neighboring ever since at the rallies for three years now. Lucky for us as they are a wonderful couple who always take care of our reservations and such as most of us are scattered around the world. I'm not sure if they always feel that lucky as it tends to get a tad loud towards the night by our location…

In 2001 there were some incredible bikes there. There is the usual bunch of neat clean line old-school M72 choppers, but also a Ural with a red sauna in the sidecar, and another Ural with a Tatra air-cooled V4 engine. There was even one with a Citroen GS 1300cc OHC Boxer engine! Incredible sound on that one, let me assure you.

The partying was well going on at the time we got there. A fearless and possibly somewhat chemically encouraged duo went swooshing by to the Sauna from a skinny dip ride on a Ural.

On Saturday there is usually a convoy to somewhere nearby to gather and see something neat or do something fun or just to make the local Gramps Association’s pacemakers to skip a beat or two. The bikes are not really quiet and the men are not pretty, so the effect on the local inhabitants is usually about the same as when Hells Angels ride by although we tend to take ourselves a whole lot less seriously. (Let’s face it—how could we?) We are somewhat more social when given a chance and some beer.

The convoy photos are from a local marketplace. If it looks a tad chilly, that is not the case. It was f-----g FREEZING! The damn rain made my coil quit for awhile, and only because I knew in advance to be suspicious about that coil I got it fixed reasonably quickly.

Among these photos is a scan which is about six years old—Beijing—somewhere in Hudongs. The bike was just bought from the little shack behind Yan Sha (Kempinski Hotel/Lufthansa Centre.) The summer is still there… Ah, memory lane…"

Orvo

2005... Orvo is going to put together a description of what happened to that OHV. I think he's also going to explain about that hog!

2004... This year's rally featured a boxer pull—like a tractor pull but with bikes. The convoy images are by far my favorites. In the bottom row you'll see a Ural with a mural and a nice black M72. Orvo sent some other images which haven't been posted yet, namely Russian choppers and a VW powered Ivan. Looks like one helluva good time!
