From Tim Clarke: "World Cup soccer fever is apon us here in South Africa. Here's my staff doing the rounds celebrating the extravaganza. Pease check out our newly relaunched website."
June 29, 2010
From Enno de Bruyn in Holland: "The front is from a CJ M1M 1996. The Housing is from a Dnepr K 750. The crank is an M72 Ural. Gerrit having here the golden hands!"

Below, from Francois Roux:
News from eastern countries. Almost by chance, I discovered next to my house in Budapest, a good professional, specialised in building brand new side cars from the past years. He has original blueprints, patterns and material that allow him to exactly build or rebuild the side car as it was originally. He is particularly expert in 'Steib' branded side cars.
He's really an doing amazing job, hand-pinstriping the white stripes, rebuilding original ornaments, upholstery, emblems, Bosch lights and... it's only a hobby for over 15 years! He has a web site (with an English version). He has clients all over Europe, and a serious reputation, even if once again, it's not his main activity.
In the back of his garage I pictured and old dusty Ural, probably from the 50s (in 6V), that he bought 15 years ago from Ukraine. He said "one day when I 'll have time, I will restore it!" Don't touch it! Isn't it gorgeous enough as is, today?
And... the masterpiece that he is finishing now is this BMW R25/3, in mint conditions, that he will very soon sell. Anybody interested? He would like to buy an R50 instead, to make another project... Other pics shows some of the original spare parts he keeps for the restorations. He can also provide repro, of a lot of specific ornaments, lights, or reflectors. I hope it will be interesting! I provide you with all the pics I did yesterday evening with my Iphone, publish all or one, as you like!

From Francois Roux: "From my project, I need to fix the rear LED light, license plate, and I'm done. I pre-tuned the carbs to allow me to go around my house heat the engine and test acceleration-decceleration situations. It might need some fine tuning and synchronisation. I noticed that one of my cylinder was hotter than the other one."
April 20, 2010
From Gaël Moalic: "I've shot Ural pics during my vacation in Florida! It's located between Orlando and Melbourne beach. Best regards, Gaël from France"

March 29, 2010
From Francois Roux: As you can see here, his M1 is really coming together. This is going to be a lovely bike.
"When I checked my generator, I removed the claps protecting the contacts. Did you know that you can find the precise date of manufacture underneath the claps? Mine dates from Sept. 8, 2005."
"The funniest thing is that I bought my bike on Sept. 30, 2004, never had any electric issues (meaning nothing related to the generator). Do you think that the maintenance crew I used to appoint for the daily operations in China would have changed my original generator?"
"Actually probably yes. I noticed already that after getting back my bike another time the tank had been changed in between. Another way to do business!"
Gerald Gardebled comments: "Actually the paper found under the protective clap is not related to the date of manufacture. It is a piece of newspaper called Beijing Wan Bao (Beijing Evening News). The paper has been put in by his mechanic. Originally, it is a piece of felt that absorbs the residue from the brushes. The actual date of manufacture for the generator is on the blue metallic tag on the generator and it is 2001."

From Francois Roux: These pictures show Francois' work-in-progress, a 6V machine that he intends to look like the bike in the first picture. You don't see whitewalls on Changs very often. They look right at home.
February 22, 2010
From Mark van der Stok: "Please find attached three pictures of a CJ750 I came across yesterday in China."
February 4, 2010
From Gaël Moalic: "Hello. Here's some pics shot in China during my travels."
November 13, 2009
From Francois Roux: "Nice to be part of the club! Currently living in Budapest, Hungary, but used to live in Beijing between 2003 and 2006. Owning two Changs, an M1 solo and an M1M bought from Gerald Gardebled."
November 9, 2009
From Enno de Bruyn: "Two good things in hand."
October 5, 2009
Uh-oh. Not good. From Enno de Bruyn in Holland: "This is my Chang. Chang is for the good and the bad. This is bad... still in love forever!"
October 3, 2009
From Woody Burns: "The music setup for my sidecar. I mount a 100 watt motorcycle amp on the lid of my battery box in the boot."
"Then mount up some outdoor waterproof speakers. I had to make the brackets myself. (What else is new being a CJ owner?)"
"Some quick wiring and hooking up a remote and iPod, and bang, done, and it was cheap. Time frame was 45 minutes and $150 in parts."
August 15, 2009
From Gaël Moalic: "Here are our three CJ750s. We received them three weeks ago from LRM. Gerald does a great job! They are beautiful and riding them is very pleasant with the warm weather of spring. We live in Saint-Raphaël in the south of France."
March 11, 2009
From Tim Clarke of Cape Sidecar Adventures: "Here are a couple of pics from a travel magazine shoot wwe were involved in."
"They were taken on Chapman's Peak pass which is a well known coastal route just outside Cape Town."
March 1, 2009
From Bill Taylor: "Here are a couple of pictures taken in front of the covered bridge in Anse St-Jean (Quebec, Canada) during a 200km road trip last summer. The bridge's claim to fame was that it was on the old Canadian $1000 bill."
January 20, 2009
From Mike Perez in New Jersey: "Here are some pics of my CJ at an Adventure Rider rally in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. I trailered her down with my hunting dog, Kayla. As you can see, we had a ball. Bike was built last year by Shao."
January 18, 2009
From Woody Burns: "I am still here lurking in the background enjoying your site. Here's a few shots of where I do my bike work. (Very cool boss.) Shao built my bike. I put about 1000km last season! Not one leak and runs very strong! I am thinking of having him make a solo (U.N. peacekeeper), solid white with U.N. on the tank and ammo box on left side (with peacekeeper on it) and short leather bag on right so you can see the drive line. Happy New Year!"
January 1, 2009
I've been trading e-mail with Ralph at MH Moto World with regards to whether or not it's appropriate to market CJs as R75 replicas since the bikes are vastly dissimilar. He sent these pictures of a bike he recently completed and has agreed that it would be better to refer to such bikes as "R75-styled" machines. I have to admit, though, the bike in these pictures is pretty awesome. (Many of you are already familiar with MHMW's eBay store which you can visit by clicking here.) Ralph expressed a great deal of interest in Kent Berg's WWII R66 recreation which provided some of the inspiration for this machine. As you may recall, Kent didn't spare any expense when he built the bike. (Click here to see it.)
July 24, 2008
From Woody Burns: "Here are a few shots of what Shao made me. The bonus was sidecar brake, rear seat, and a ton of spare part that I didn’t ask for!"
July 10, 2008
Doug Fergusson lives in Saskatchewan and owns this M1S restored by Shao Yiqi.
June 2, 2008
From Woody Burns in Salt Lake City, Utah: "Well CJ Sidecar has just sent me a few pictures of my bike they have just finished up for me. Please post a few so the group can be jealous. This site is why I got a CJ750."

May 30, 2008
Say Ni Hao to Ava Lou who works at Luke's in Beijing. She loves these bikes as much as the rest of us. How would you like to meet her?
February 25, 2008
From Vern Alg in Houston: "Here are some pictures of my new bike from Big Bill. It arrived in November. I was still recovering from my bike accident in China, but I uncrated, added fluids, installed a battery and drove it 35 miles home. The last picture is in its new home among the rest of my bikes."
January 28, 2008
Enno de Bruyn ordered parts from LRM to replace the Denper parts found on his bike.
August 20, 2007
Enno lives in Holland and owns this handsome M1M. The Netherlands seems to have the world's second highest CJ population density—right behind China!
July 13, 2007
Dave Chai just got his M1 last week and he loves it!
July 4, 2007
From Antonio Magaña in Almeria, Spain: "I´m a dealer for Li Yan. Last week we recieved a shipment and it is fantastic! Motorcycles are shipped with very good packing and an oil film for protection, very good for 35 days on board [a ship].
The paint is very good and bright. It is the first time that we ordered an OHV engine it looks and roars nice!
We love our supplier because time after time his quality improves. Our warehouse is full of motorcycles. We don´t know were to put the next 12 sets arriving in July!
June 30, 2007
More pictures from finn2433 in China.
The first one looks very familiar!
October 28, 2006
James Quinn's M1M. (That looks like a Guzzi in the background!)
October 28, 2006
These pictures came from finn2433@sina.com. That's all I can tell you because the rest was in Chinese.
October 26, 2006
This OHV belongs to Erv Salvador of Vancouver, BC.
October 15, 2006
"My name is Dirk Lottering, a South-African who''s been living and working in London for the last six years. Always wanted a sidecar outfit and could not help grabbing this one of eBay recently. Did my first trip ever in a sidecar collecting from the seller in York all the way back to Essex where I live. Took me 12 hours to drive the 280 miles since the motor is still being run in."
"Had to replace the wheelbearings after the trip as they all seized up, thankfully for the info on the website replaced them with sealed bearings. I am enjoying the bike alot and certainly hope to send more pictures in from time to time as we do nice trips in the rig. Our springer spaniel puppy Bella also loves going for a ride and certainly safer in the sidecar than the pannier on my other bike."
"I decided to just ride the bike as much as possible instead of going for the well looked after retro style and busy pimping my ride with some stickies as you will se from the pictures. The idea is to strip it down in a year or two and go for a nice pearl white bike with lots of chrome! In case you're wondering, Maverick is my alias on various forums around the world."
July 6, 2006
Carl Moeller lives in Connecticut and owns this fine looking M1M WWII recreation.
That MG must be handy in traffic sometimes!
June 9, 2006
Joe Martin visits Xiaogang Ji in Plano, Texas.
(He also owns a bike from CJS.) This was a first for Joe to see two CJs together.
John Hosier in Dallas and Joe are attempting to get together and take some pictures as well. They have three CJS bikes in north Texas and a fourth in Allen.
Joe hopes to get all four together for pictures.
April 7, 2006
Introducing Benjamin Quintens (aka BenQ).
He's a Belgian expat living in Beijing.
He loves to ride his "fire engine".
March 27, 2006
From Joe Martin: "My name is Joe from Allen, Texas. I recently received my CJ750 from Shao just under a month ago. Freddie B. in California and John Hosier in Dallas have been instrumental in helping me through the entire process of buying a bike overseas and maintaining the CJs."
"Fred suggested I contact you to post pictures and stories about my experiences so far."
"I have a few stories and maybe able to help others along the way. I'm sending a few pictures of my bike for you to take a gander at."
"By the way, I am very pleased so far with what I have bought from Shao."
"I do have some mechanical ability and have worked on my own aircooled VWs for over ten years, so this is very similar."
March 22, 2006
From James McCanless in Texas, this 1937 R12 with an M1 engine! "It has a Russian telescopic front end, Dnepr gearbox with reverse, CJ bars, levers and throttle, and it will have a Russian sidecar. I'm currently fabricating a plate for the the final drive.
(Gonna be using a CJ driveshaft.) Jim Bryant helped on engine/parts. Bill from Red October helped with a reverse military transmission that I bolted to the M1 engine. I like CJU. I've made some new friends and recognized old ones like my ol' buddy Jay Williams. CJs are neat bikes. I don't think there's too many in Texas."
The third picture shows James's Red October Dnepr and a Frank's Classic Sidecars T-shirt.
January 13, 2006
This bike is owned by someone known only as bmw1224 who lives somewhere in China.
He sent these pictures but no information.
As you can see it's a 6V machine with a pre-war BMW-style taillight assembly.
The sidecar retains its original CJ750 swoosh emblem and the headlamp bezel has no visor suggesting that it's an older machine.
According to Blaine (above) the license plate is from Inner Mongolia.
June 3, 2005
It's Don Chapton's fleet—a CNAMC CJ6A and the M1 he bought recently. Don says the bike was a good value but needs lots of attention to bring it up to snuff.
Meanwhile, here's a peek at the instruments inside the CJ6A. Looks daunting, doesn't it?
These instruments are marked in English which must make Don's task of flying it a bit less challenging. You really have to see one of these planes to fully appreciate how cool they are—especially in the air.
Don hopes to redo the cockpit and repaint the plane over the upcoming winter. He'll also be disassembling the bike for a thorough re-re-rebuild. I'll be looking forward to seeing the results on both!
September 23, 2004
Pieter de Haan lives in the Netherlands and has owned his Chang for two years. I won't even try to guess what's happening in this shot...
August 11, 2004
Dariusz Wiecha sent these images of his friend Tim Miller's "plastic" Chang. It's really wild seeing that flattie on an otherwise modern looking bike.
In between the carburetors at the cylinder connection is sort of a balance tube that makes the carbs act as a single unit. Tim says it's very effective.
No plunger frame on this bike either. In fact it looks like the engine and gearbox would be the only major components common to our bikes. There can't be very many of these in Britain where Tim lives.
Here we can see a few odds and ends that might interchange with a traditional CJ—like pegs and pedals, for example.
That's a thoroughly modern looking final drive. Check out that cast rim.
July 15, 2004
This Nanchang CJ6A was at an air show in Geneseo, NY on July 10. Unfortunately, none of the detail pictures I made inside the cockpit got recorded. Too bad. You guys would have loved the instruments.
Neat plane. It's a copy of the Russian Yak-18A. This one was built in 1973. That's a variable pitch prop, by the way.
It's no secret that I have a thing about number tags. This beauty is on the nose gear.
And each of the wing gear has one of these babies.
I don't think this was installed by CNAMC but it's still pretty interesting. It's a build tag mounted on the port side below the tail.
This little fella is mounted on one of the engine cylinders. The engine in this plane had been replaced with a newer Chinese copy of a Yak power plant.
July 12, 2004
Those who follow the CJE message board know that Don Chapton is looking to buy a CJ. But in one sense, he already has one. This is how his Nanchang looked when Don first got it.
Don says "it was a lot of fun to build and it is a great flying airplane." I think it's just plain awesome.
June 2, 2004
Ken Wells lives in the UK and owns this M1M sporting PLA Air Force markings. Say, what's that parked behind it?
Oh, that's just his other Chang, a Nanchang CJ6A. Whoa! How'd you like to go for a spin in that?
Another fine product from the China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company. How can anybody not LOVE this stuff?!
The cockpit.
The instrument faces have the Jiangxi logo on them just like our speedometers do.
What a nice pair. Great looking PRC flag too!
It's hard not to be envious, that's for sure.
Nice?
If you enjoy flying the chair...
This is just beautiful.
Aaaeeeeeeeyyyyaaaaa!
January 23, 2004
Christmas greetings from Leo and Angela...
12/16/03
A more recent view of Pieter de Haan's M1M. Sweet! Be sure to have a look at Pieter's web site at Chang-Jiang.nl
10/21/03
This gorgeous 1996 CJ750 belongs to Pieter de Haan of Hardenberg, Netherlands. Nice!
9/26/03
Introducing Angela Struyk enjoying some ice cream aboard the Dragon Lady, her husband Leo's bike. The Struyks, who live in Shanghai, were out riding on an Island off the Shanghai coast on this occasion.
8/18/03
RLI had some great looking bikes. Unfortunately, they recently went off line. I regret not having downloaded some of the images while they were available. This is their Vikinger Classic M1 model, minus taillight.
Another RLI M1, also minus the taillight. Notice the toolbox and R71 style fender braces. There wasn't much supporting that rear fender, though. RLI called their CJ business Vintage Sidecar Cruisers. They had a yellow bike on their site with a Model A style taillight which provided the inspiration for my bike.

From Boon in China: This photo was in the latest edition of Far Eastern Economic Review. The guy is a hotel boss in Shanghai and that's a pretty nice looking red CJ.  It was built by Danny Woody.

Tyler Mingst of California owns this excellent M1M. He has another CJ besides this one.
The red stars on the gas tank were Tyler's idea.
This is a very nice looking bike.

This is it, guys, Chang Jiang Mecca. Yes, that's right—Nanchang. Tyler sent this image taken during a visit to the holiest city where he visited...
...the CJ factory warehouse!
What a rare treat for a westerner. And look at all those bikes!

Look at this fine M1M, owned by Tim Baitson of West Yorkshire, UK.
Tim has done quite a bit of work on this bike—lowering the front mud guard, polishing the heads, fitting new tires, adding a deep sump, replacing the taillight, etc.
Tim has also added some BMW items which—you have to admit—look right at home on this machine.
Those polished heads really do stand out, especially on a black bike.
Picture this bike with some white pinstriping!
It could definitely pass for a '38.
We don't see very many solo Changs. This one looks gorgeous.

Ronald Smith of Montréal owns this CJ modified to resemble a Soviet M72. Ronald also owns a couple Russian bikes.

This shot was sent to us by Dereck at ATST in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The bike is a stock M1S with left side sidecar owned by Doug Hendry of Durban. Thanks to ATST, there are CJs running around South Africa.
This is a color shot of the same bike.

Here's another Chang from Durban. It belongs to Arland Read. Note the personal touches on this bike, particularly the sidecar seat.
Arland's bike from another angle.
And again.
That looks like a comfortable chair.
