Frans De Wit: "It appears that the people,
workers, peasants, white-collar, children and the PLA
army, navy and air force will guard the Motherland from
attack from the outside, like from the USA-sustained,
runaway province of Formosa, better known as Taiwan. Not
completely sure of that, but after seeing so many
propaganda I'm quite sure..." |

Frans De Wit: "Look what Chris To
sent me: a previousley unknown Cultural Revolution poster
with a CJ on it! He has an extensive collection of
Cultural Revolution relics on Culturegems.com and he sent me this picture
of a poster he has. It is from the middle 80's he says,
and has two images in one poster. It's definitely a CJ,
but its perspective is quite distorted. It looks like the
bike is bent around the PLA soldier, and where is
the left hand cylinder? These boots were made for
walking, but not for hiding motorcycle parts! (His left
foot seems to have at least 6 toes, or it wouldn't fit
the boot...)" |

 |
Frans De Wit sent these two
historic items. The first is a poster entitled On the
Banks of Laoho River by Cheng Min-sheng. Can you spot the
bikes? The other is an old photograph featuring a rare
Donghai 750 sidecar motorcycle. |
 |
Below are CJs and Dong Hai 750s from from
seventies and eighties PLA Pictorials . |

Frans De Wit sent this
excellent PLA poster from Maopost.com. Frans points out
that although this bike is lacking hand levers, it does
have a manual turn signal arrow! Check out the M72 style
sidecar frame around the fender. The backdrop appears to
be Shanghai. |
 |
Also from Frans,
this scene depicting an electric motor being delivered to
some very happy people. The bike is nondescript but could
be a Donghai 750. Would anyone care to speculate? |

|
 |
Leo Struyk
sent this wonderful image. Judging from the hand
controls, the bike is probably a Donghai 750. It also has
one of those rare and unusual turn indicators. Leo also
translated the text which says Launching into military sports,
protecting our socialist country. |

It's not very prominent but there
is indeed a Chang in this beautiful piece of propaganda
artwork sent by Frans De Wit. The car is
is a Hong Qi (Red Flag) which dominated the
streets 25 years ago. There's also a row of bicycles in
the picture. It looks like two PLA soldiers are starting
the bike. This image dates from the seventies. |

Zhou En Lai's motorcade was escorted by M72s
during his 1966 visit to Romania. The car is a Russian
ZiL-111G. |

Members of the Tianjin Militia. Look at the
machine gunner! |
 |
A very elaborately staged photo showing PLA
Donghai 750s inside a tunnel complex. The enlarged image
shows trucks, AA artillary, troops and more. Does it look
familiar? If not, click here. |
 |
PLA soldiers used Russian M72s during the
Korean War as shown here. |
 |
The Chang Jiang 750 hadn't yet been
introduced when this photo was made in 1955 so these
women PLA soldiers are riding on M72s. In the enlarged
image you'll see four solo bikes in addition to the
sidecar outfit. |

Policemen escorting people across a busy
street. Their CJ is parked in the foreground. |

 |
October 1, 1954, PRC's fifth anniversary.
These PLA chemical warfare specialists are riding M72s
since the CJ is still a couple years in the future. Many
CJ engines would ultimately find homes in M72 frames. The
enlarged image has at least 20 bikes, all with whitewall
tires! |

|
 |
Look at all the Changs in this PLA
photograph. I'd love to know how many CJs were acquired
by the PLA. |
 |
In the pre-CJ era image from 1957, PLA
communications specialists are riding Russian bikes. |
 |
250cc Jawa-type bikes are ideally suited for
the type of use they're getting in this image. |
| 12/17/03 |
|
 |
These are communications specialists from
the PLA. You'll see that the PLA not only used Chang
Jiangs but Dong Hai 750s as well! |
 |
This image dates from 1957 when the PLA
relied heavily on Russian equipment including M72s and
Jawa-type 250cc motorcycles. These are also
communications specialists. |
 |
The Russian bikes are pretty interesting and
so are the jeeps and other vehicles. Wouldn't you love to
see these images in color?! |

Another great PLA propaganda painting with a
CJ! |
 |
What's that lurking over this PLA soldier's
right shoulder? |
 |
Is this fantastic or what? Chinese PLA
propaganda art with two very prominent Chang Jiangs! |
 |
Frans de Wit sent this
three PLA propaganda image. The enlarged version of this
picture has five CJs in it! |
 |
In this painting, four CJs lead a group of
Soviet T-59s across a river. Those bikes are really
loaded down. Check out the M72-style sidecar frames. (Frans
de Wit) |
 |
This painting is terrificand there's a
CJ in it! (But you'll have to look hard to see it.) I
feel compelled to enlist in the PLA. (Frans de
Wit) |
 |
Fabulous propaganda artwork with a CJ in the
foreground. The passenger has a rocket launcher! |
 |
And more propaganda. This drawing of some
PLA winter operations also features a Chang. |
 |
Another great propaganda image, however this
one features a Dong Hai 750... |
 |
...but this one has a Chang Jiang! |
 |
Somewhere in this propaganda poster is a
Chang Jiang. Can you spot it? |
 |
A poster from the March, 1975 PLA games in
Beijing. This appeared on the back page of the July, 1975
PLA Pictorial. The enlarged image shows the
entire poster. |
 |
A propaganda poster with a Dong Hai 750. |
 |
Neat propaganda image from the PLA
Pictorial, October,1970. (The enlarged view shows
the entire image.) |
 |
Great PLA propaganda image. Yep, that's a
Chang! |
 |
If you think flying the chair is exciting,
how about flying the whole enchilda? This is a PLA
demonstration. Check out the camouflage and whitewalls.
Camo is painted right over the CJ emblem. I wonder how
the bike was after the landing. |
 |
Here PLA soldiers demonstrate how to ride
while under fire. |
 |
And here they show us how to ride while ON
fire. |
 |
PLA soldiers put on a riding exhibition. The
military truck in the background has whitewalls! |
 |
An amazing demonstration of riding ability
by Chinese armed forces. That's right, they're changing
the sidecar tires on the fly. |
 |
It looks like they may be using that ramp to
get the sidecar back on the ground. Look at the
whitewalls! |
 |
High speed U-turn demonstration. Those poor
whitewalls... |
 |
Here's a bonus picture for the whitewall
enthusiasts. Is this great or what? |
 |
From the September, 1971 PLA Pictorial,
a group of CJs crossing water during exercises in a
contaminated atmosphere. |
 |
This is a drawing of the sidecar competition
held during the March, 1975 PLA Games. It appeared in the
July, 1975 PLA Pictorial. |
 |
PLA soldiers riding off into the wild blue
yonder... on Chang Jiangs, of course! |
 |
Here's a PLA exercise from the Chinese
magazine Weapons Knowledge, April, 1984. The
enlarged image shows another Chang. |
 |
From the July, 1975 PLA Pictorial,
we see CJ at the March, 1975 PLA sport meeting in
Beijing. Different competitions related to military
training were held including sidecar competition. |
 |
Also from the PLA Pictorial.
Placing a Chang in the lower left corner was popular with
Chinese photographers. You can see it in some of the
other images on these pages. (Click for the whole
picure.) |
 |
These are PLA training exercises. The
enlarged image shows at least 11 Changs! |
 |
This appears to be another training
exercise, but is that a Chang or is it an M72? |
 |
The PLA on exercises. In the enlarged image
you can see more Changs. |
 |
The only other CJs that can do this are
airplanes. |
 |
Soldiers take a lunch break. Although not
very obvious, there are two bikes in this image. |
 |
|
 |
From the October, 1970 Pictorial of the
People, this image of Zhou En Lai with a delegation
from Yemen. And look at all those Changs including at
least one with whitewall tires! |
 |
August 6, 1970, this time Premier Zhou is
with a delegation from Sudan. And again, more Changs! |
 |
|
 |
North Korean soldiers riding M72s during the
Korean War. I wonder if my dad met any of these guys. |
 |
|
 |
This is a camouflaged plastic Chang that was
shipped to our comrades in North Korea. 30 similar bikes
were shipped to Hong Kong as well. |
 |

 |
Chinese policewomen undergo training on
Chang Jiangs. |
 |
They even learn to fly the chair... with
three people on board! |
 |
Chinese policewomen, a modern Chang Jiang
and some fancy riding for the camera. |

Chinese policemen riding one of those
plastic Changs. This one is equipped with a tear gas
cannon! |
