Sealing the exhaust by Richard Cook

Many methods have been used to seal Chang exhaust pipes from the sublime to the foolish.
My first try was with silicone seal which lasted a few months. The silicone just can’t get a good bite on the chrome and eventually blows out. This is a combination of techniques I have seen folks recommend with the addition of muffler clamps from the local auto parts store.

First we need a grinder and a pair of muffler clamps from the auto parts store, and don’t forget a beverage can. Woodstove glue will be used as a sealer.

1)   I cleaned the muffler clamps with lacquer thinner and painted them with high temp flat black the night before.

2)   On the bike measure where you have clearance to fit the clamp, mark the muffler with a marker, and take the nut and washer off that removes the muffler.

3 Protect the muffler with a cloth and fit it in the vice. Remember the Normandie, make sure no sparks will burn something and place your water hose nearby.

4)   With safety goggles on grind notches in top and bottom of the muffler for the clamps.

5)   While drinking the rest of the gasket material container fluid we find out that Turtle Wax polishing compound removes the final drive oil from the muffler that we spilled on it in another episode.

6)   Cut the gasket material into strips a few inches wide.

7)   Test fit the gasket material. My left pipe took just one strip and my right took two wraps.

8)   I used the material that is sold by the local woodstove store to glue on the sealing strips around the door as a sealer. Apply liberally while fitting the joint together.

9)   Use a bit of Locktite and fit the muffler holding nut.

10)   Install the muffler clamp to hold it all together. I could have used a motorcycle type clamp but I figured this was cheap and most folks would never notice.

11)   My header has a washer welded to it for the clamp to press on and is currently using some old sealing washers between the clamps and the head. The key to proper tension is the 70s BMW style wrench that is in the picture. If the header clamp fix works well I’ll safety wire it later.
